Brown, White Rona Chang
I watched The Killing Fields, a film about a NY Times reporter whose coverage of the Cambodian War wins him a Pulitzer prize for reporting while his assistant, Dith Pran, in Cambodia goes missing. I'm generally not drawn to war movies, too bloody, too sad, and usually too surreal. This has to be the best war movie I've ever seen. I'm a complete Law order junkie therefore a big fan of Sam Waterston, who plays Sidney Schanberg the NY Times reporter. Though the best acting in the movie came from Dr. Haing S. Ngor who portrayed Dith Pran with genuine insight and conviction. After the movie, I looked him up on the web and read about his life. A Cambodian who also suffered tragic losses during Pol Pot's reign, he was a refugee in the US, who eventually and incredulously lost his life to LA street gang members in 1996. So sad, but he did leave his Academy Award wining portrayal of Dith Pran for us to watch.
