Joseph Banda's Wish

The other day I heard this wonderful broadcast on WNYC about a thirteen year old boy from a slum in Zambia named Joseph Banda who after this initial story on his slum, Chibolya the listeners of BBC offered to pay for a flying lesson for Joseph, who would like to become a pilot and start a fund for his education. This story about Joseph Banda's wish has stayed with me this whole week. The charm and the dream of this young boy and his wonder as he takes off into the air and looks at the slums from a different perspective has been a warming story. It is with this story of hope that I leave you this week for Christmas and join my family for some holiday cheer. Happy holidays dear friends. I wish you warmth and well wishes as we draw 2009 to a close. I'll pop in again some time next week.

Hello! I just saw your post re Joseph Banda. He moved many people, including myself. I contacted the BBC and they put me in touch with Jo Fidgen... the reporter.
I have been in contact with her, Joseph and Joseph's mother Florence. A group of us here in NYC are getting together to raise $$$ for a scholarship fund for Joseph.
I was wondering if you might want to be involved.
You can call me at my shop The Hat Shop NYC... 212 219 1445 and I will fill you in with what's been happening (we arranged for his flight (there was a follow up story) and bought him a bike so he could get to school faster.
It's all very exciting and it's incredible how a small amt. of money can get big results.
I have some experience with this ... you can check out what I work on at thorntreeproject.org
