After listening to the interview Terry Gross had with author Elizabeth Cline on Fresh Air about ethical fashion I thought about the manufacturing chain that gets our clothes go through. While a good portion of my wardrobe is vintage, used, made by either R or my family tailor, the discussion made me think long and hard about my choices in purchasing new clothing and how I can improve on those choices by buying less, and making more ethical choices. I applaud the major retailers for finally taking a move in bringing about change in the safety standards of the factories that manufacture their clothes in Bangladesh.
These last couple of months in NY has been lots of catching up with old friends, eating lots of my favorite foods, seeing art, and some nice walking around. Three photographer friends took my portrait recently- wow! I almost felt like the most popular photographer around for a short spell. I've also had the opportunity to meet and talk to new people. One of the sweetest souls I met recently was photographer Abigail Smithson. She asked me out to tea and we spent hours talking about photography, travel and life. Much of it is on her blog The Photographer Discloses. It's very much in conversation format so it's not too formal sounding and I like that. I also like the thoughtful title she gave the conversation North, South, East, and Queens.
Much of my time is spent in front of a computer screen, sitting down. When I go to work, I spend about 9 hours in the dark, on the computer
and when I come home, I spend time returning emails and time on the
internet. In the winter, this is particularly downright depressing. While I'm not a couch potato, my work days always drain my
energy, and getting a workout in is hard when you have to factor in
eating, commuting plus other chores. You might be just like me. I've lamented in the past about my behind getting bigger from my mostly sedentary lifestyle but now I've finally taken a move in the right direction to be active and healthy.

In January, R and I joined a Y in PA. We both like exercising (when we have time to do it) and love having access to a pool. We had a fairly open schedule so we went about 5 days a week. If you tack on all those walks for Clyde, we were getting a decent workout. When I returned to NY, I had to figure out a way to maintain a workout without a regular gym membership. Gyms have to be accessible so that you can actually get to them to use them. If you don't have much of a budget, they can be cost prohibitive. For a while, I used my Y Away membership and when I went to my sister's house to hang out with her and the kids, I used her treadmill.

In one of my 'genius' moves, I also packed one of my Jillian Michaels dvds with me (30 Day Shred – an oldie but goodie) and was using it on heavy rotation. Her videos are great – you don't need much to workout, just some space, a set of light weights, and a yoga mat. I looked for more online and have since developed a routine for working out to her different programs daily. JM's more recent workouts are less repetitive and more dynamic. I've also started listening to her podcasts at work (R makes fun of me for devoting so much time to her) and they keep me motivated. I've since cleaned up some of my eating habits based on some of the suggestions and information I've learned listening to those podcasts. Calories in, calories out- maintaining healthy weight is adding and subtracting. Counting calories is something I've never really been aware of and now trying to be conscious of while eating.

I'm now waking up early to exercise before work (I'm a morning person anyway), eating a primarily vegetarian diet and heading to work on a good exercise high and have great energy throughout the day. Now that the weather is nice, I'm also taking walks after my lunch break and after dinner. I've also cut out lots of screen time at home. While my email correspondence is slower, I am living a happier life, off screen.

What do you do to stay healthy? I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas.Rona Changhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08906236684888015601noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-936253552770443832.post-21821555987961328352013-03-18T12:00:00.000-04:002013-03-18T12:00:03.319-04:00Hello Sun

I spent part of the weekend editing down The Stories from This Chinese Life on the site after talking to several smart friends about how I should present such a broad project. Their advice? Less is more for the website.

I also added some images from Breathing In which has never made an appearance on previous versions of the site because it looked too different, and in my mind, a separate project. Breathing In and Ann (my late collaborator) are both near and dear to me so why not share it? I'd love to bring it to a larger audience at some point so that's still a goal.

The editing work is ongoing, but that's my job. And I'm happy to be thinking about such things.

Today I'm heading down to Florida, where I met Ann and my husband Ross nearly six years ago. After such a dark winter, Ross and I are looking forward to meeting each other there, some sun, and seeing our sweet family from London, CA, and PA. Fun times coming up. Walking around and actually looking at my surroundings in Jackson Heights still bring new things to my attention. I'm trying out the diptych format and see if I should make more. I've been back in Queens for about two weeks and have been soaking up all the good ethnic treats NYC has to offer with good friends. I've been lucky enough to have had Japanese three times already! That more than makes up for the drought I experienced this winter. I just need to get some pizza into my system and I'm all set. All of my editing has reminded me to share more photos from China here. Despite the fact that I am Chinese, I had a hard time eating and getting a balanced diet in China. Most days I skipped meat and countless numbers of restaurants because they did not look sanitary in the way that I was used to. In Taiwan, where I grew up, I eat lots of street food and night markets are my favorite places to sample small eats. China is different, especially rural China. Running water is not a given. Neither is electricity. Or a restroom within the restaurant. Then there's the problem of soap. In China, I travel with plenty of tissue (not provided 99% of the time), soap, and water. Even after taking those precautions, I remained careful about choosing a restaurant that looked clean.

The only place where food was not a worry was in Dali, Yunnan (western China). Dali has a temperate climate and is warmer than locales north such a Lijiang and Shangri-la. There was a wonderful pay-as-you-wish veggie place that volunteer Buddhists ran that I frequented. And the best part was that mushroom season is during summertime in Yunnan. There was a gorgeous abundance of it everywhere as I sampled many wild varieties cooked up in all sorts of delicious ways. It was heaven eating mushrooms daily and having lots of vegetables. Part of our plan last summer was to try to travel to western Sichuan province, where there are Tibet Autonomous Regions. Alas, it wasn't meant to be as these area were closed to foreigners since an incident of self immolation occurred earlier last year. However, we did join a gathering of monks who traveled from all over China to Wenbi Monastery in Lijiang and communed with them. This was a magical moment of old, young, and a little girl laying on the roof, on top of the mountain.Rona Changhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08906236684888015601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-936253552770443832.post-63404568806055870812013-02-15T11:23:00.001-05:002013-02-15T11:45:18.741-05:00P.S.- I love you

While Valentine's day is not everyone's cup of tea, and I can't really remember ever celebrating it, the posts from Design*Sponge leading up to yesterday was a reminder of what the holiday should be. An occasion to celebrate your love for your family and friends. All I ever wish is to be close to my family and friends, even though most of us are spread thousands of miles apart and can only see each other occasionally. Being in Western PA has only heightened that feeling. I often feel alone and miss my loved ones.

The person I chose to be with out here and love dearly is my darling husband Ross. We had a typical day of working on our projects, heading to the Y for a swim, walking Clyde, and watching a netflix movie at night (2 Days in Paris with Julie Delpy, suggested by D*S). I made dinner and surprised him with a batch of homemade lavender infused chocolate truffles. They were totally easy to make and a hit. I'm passing the recipe along, in case you would like to spread the love. ; )

Wishing you a sweet weekend with loved ones. We took a short hike to Buttermilk Falls on Sunday. It's a short drive from our apartment and we assumed that the path wouldn't be too treacherous since we had a sunny weekend. The ice formations were spectacular and the light was so beautiful underneath the rocks that we decided to go back the same afternoon and make some pictures. It's always hard to start but I'm glad to finally be making work in PA. It's been a couple of months since I've had the attention span to read. My subway rides were always the best time to get lots of dedicated reading time in. Now that I don't have subway rides, I listen to podcasts as I walk Clyde or while I'm working. Ross and I are always on the lookout for new ones. Recently, he turned me on to the True Story Podcast, which is pretty similar to a constant fav, The Moth.
The Moth
America's Test Kitchen (another new fav!)
Story Corp

I also listen to Jillian Michaels, Alec Balwin, Rick Steves (the PBS money belt travel guy!), After The Jump (from Design*Sponge), Radiolab, and 99% Invisible.

This list is probably very similar to yours, but if I'm missing something great, please share it with me!
I'm really excited for this book on the Tokaido and plan to dedicate some time to it. I'm also looking forward to getting some subway reading time in soon! It's Chinese new year's eve. It's a time for gathering with family and I won't see mine until a week or two from now. I miss them dearly, especially my sister's girls. In addition to my family here, I think about my family in Taiwan and China all the time. It's hard to go years without seeing loved ones. Two parts of a project I've been working on, This Chinese Life, is dedicated to them.

A poignant film that centers around the migrant population during the Chinese New Year is Last Train Home. My summer in China riding through provinces on crowded trains prepared me for some of the hardships and circumstances but it is still a hard film to watch. The story is all too common. Another Chinese film worth noting is Stolen Life.Rona Changhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08906236684888015601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-936253552770443832.post-10000473918584744502013-02-08T09:44:00.000-05:002013-02-08T09:44:01.144-05:00Wild Flowers

We just watched Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture. Her sense of humor is great and her depiction of her generation of 20 somethings is spot on in many ways. I can't help but admire her parents' loft in that "I can't believe you live there" NY real estate envy sort of way. Looking forward to trying her tv series Girls.Rona Changhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08906236684888015601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-936253552770443832.post-3918106257032265682013-02-04T15:37:00.000-05:002013-02-04T15:37:10.218-05:00New year, new site

Hi folks. It's been a harsh winter here in PA. It's always 10-15 degrees colder than NY and that makes me not like the outdoors. Really, I like my tropical island roots and love the heat (+ humidity). Despite my preferences, I continue to take Clyde on long walks and am happily attending the Y. Though bad weather has it's perks. I've spent the better part of the last month editing (this is constant) and reworking my site. It has a new look with bigger images. Horizontal scrolling that should help with faster navigation. Come visit! It may be a case of the winter blues or maybe something more. I was scheduled to head back to this city at the end of Jan. and now the plans have been postponed. There were people and shows I was planning to catch like Stacy Mehrfar's exhibit at Clamp Art of Tall Poppy Syndrome with Amy Stein. Spending Chinese New Year with my family was also on my agenda. I'm bummed out but there's not much I can do to change the situation. If you are in NY this Sat. (Jan. 19th), the Choices Thrift Store hosted at Momenta Art by fellow Cooper Alum Carmelle Safdie looks like fun.Rona Changhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08906236684888015601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-936253552770443832.post-56387746006586388622013-01-17T16:09:00.000-05:002013-01-17T16:14:12.569-05:00Artist Quotes
Andy Adams of Flak Photo has been posting some great quotes on fb that are resonating with me. I'm reposting them to share with you and also to keep them on file here.
Last month's events in Sandy Hook, CT are still on my mind. We rented Lynn Ramsey's We Need To Talk About Kevin without knowing what the movie was about (Ramsey is one of our favorite directors). It was unexpectedly a heavy heavy movie. The agony Tilda Swinton portrays rings true to the suffering one may feel after a tragedy. One of the most hopeful things to come after Sandy Hook is that dialogue is taking place and people are talking about it. Happy new year! We had a wonderful holiday filled with family and friends. I hope yours was a joyful one as well. My mom came to visit for a week and we had a blast with her. I'll post some highlights from her trip soon. We had a great start to the new year as seen in the polar plunge above. We of course were just spectators. We're not nuts or gutsy enough to plunge into the freezing Connoquenessing River but the 70+ who participated raised money for the Harmony Parks and Fire and Rescue Departments.

The month is now half over and I feel as if I'm pulling myself out of the thick, dark winter. Many of my days were spent on the computer, cleaning up my archives, sorting and editing. It is necessary work but at times it can take so much of my brain energy, I felt drained many nights after a full day of working. We've just joined our local Y and are so very excited to have access to facilities, especially to a pool (swimming is one of my biggest joys in life). I'm also trying to get into the flow of shooting out here in PA. This new landscape is inspiring and I want to share it with you.
