Haiti

I apologize for the absence. Work has been intense and somewhere between popping hundreds of flashes, I was in Mexico. At the same time Nymphoto had an Art for Haiti auction that I failed to mention here. Most of you should have gotten an email or facebook message from me about it. We were able to raise money and I hope some continual awareness. My good buddy Liu was sent to Haiti by the Buddhist charity group he works for. Here's a video of him discussing what he saw.

I'm also debating whether or not to continue this blog. I currently publish via ftp and blogger is discontinuing the service. I could migrate but don't know if I have the time or the wits to do it.

PS- Happy Birthday Justine!

A Conversation with Nadia Sablin on Nymphoto

Still Life with Yellow Hummer from Alehovshchina Nadia Sablin

Yanush with a Pregnant Cat from From the Mountains and to the Sea Nadia Sablin

My Conversation with Nadia Sablin is on the Nymphoto Blog today. The glimmer of light she captures in her low-light interiors are gorgeous as are the textures and layers.

El Bambino (The Baby)

El Bambino (The Baby) Rona Chang

For those who came out last night to see Nymphoto Presents at Sasha Wolf, thank you. If you could not come (for some inexcusable reason) you have until June 6 to catch it.

El Bambino is another image from Peru I've been debating.

My Conversation on Nymphoto

West Baray, Siem Reap, Cambodia from The Hold Over Water Rona Chang

My Nymphoto Conversation is up. Thank you Maria for introducing me to Nymphoto and for posting the Conversation. The Conversation is in Nymphoto Conversations: Volume 1 for sale now on Blurb for $31 (link on the side bar). It's a good read and we (Nymphoto) worked really hard on the book and the two shows.

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening last night and everyone for your support. I felt so special when Joe Maida showed up towards the end of the night and told me he wouldn't have missed it for the world. You should have seen my face light up, Joe is the sweetest guy ever (and an amazing photographer who keeps running off to Japan.) And I'm sorry I don't have any photos of the opening. I was way too caught up with saying hellos and talking to people to remember to whip out my camera until it was too late. Next time I will have to ask someone to be in charge of it for me.

A group show exhibiting a compelling collection of work by contemporary women photographers from across the globe. While diverse in content, these works convey the complexity of the female gaze - the woman behind the camera. The photographs ignite a spirit by addressing a diversity of issues, which inevitably calls into question: what is feminine.

The exhibit features work from artists who entered our first call for entries:

Nina Buesing Corvallo

Candace posted a Nymphoto Conversation with Nina. Since joining Nymphoto, Nina has become one of my closest friends and advisors on "shop talk." She inspires and encourages me. Have a read, I'm sure you will be affected as well. I love the combination of the two photos below.

Picked up my prints for the two Nymphoto shows. They look good (one is a brand spankin' new image that I'm very excited about), I'm having them matted. So glad it's coming together nicely, more on the shows soon.

(Blogger looks like it's cooperating today!)

Spring's In The Air

I'm super excited that it's going to be 65 degrees F today. I put on a lovely vintage dress for the occasion. I found a recipe for Strawberry Ricotta Muffins that I'm going to try and bake this weekend. I am also planning on scanning negs from the Peru trip to show you next week, so stay tuned.

My conversation with my dear friend Meera Margaret Singh is up today on the Nymphoto blog. I hope to do another residency with her in the near future. ACA was so much fun. (That's a pic of Meera charming the guy who performs outside of the Starbucks in Daytona Beach.)

2009 New Year Resolutions

I've never made New Year's Resolutions before, just lots and lots of to-do lists. So this will kind of be a combo one, listed by month. It's not a very specific list. I'm not sure I'll accomplish these things in this exact order but I think it's good to have it down and maybe revisit this time next year to see if I managed to accomplish everything. Feel free to share some of your resolutions in the comments section.

Jan- Buy and hang a hook in bedroom to get handbags off the floor.
Feb- Head to Peru and hike the Inca trail. (Something that I've been planning since my first trip there.) Pick up some Spanish along the way.
Mar- Clean out my inbox as I'm sure it'll be overflowing by now.
Apr- Continue to post a photo a day on blog whether it's from Breathing In or other new scanned work.
May- Save money (my goal is half the paycheck).
Jun- Go berry picking.
Jul- Go camping at a beach. (Need to borrow tent.)
Aug- Snack on more veggies instead of chips.
Sept- Visit cousin Henry and wife Grace when the baby is born.
Oct- Swim better (more efficiently) and continue going to the gym 3x a week.
Nov- Read all the Narayan books I got last Christmas.
Dec- This one's a bit of a secret for now so I'll have to keep you updated.

Also- my Breathing In series is now on the side bar. So if I post about other things, they won't get lost. My Conversation with Juliana Beasley, who is a wonderful character and writer is up today on the Nymphoto blog. Go read it, you'll be entertained and charmed for sure.

Conversations

As I was lying in bed just half an hour ago, I realized that I had not put a link up to my Conversation with Jennifer Williams from Thurs. I then realized that none of the Conversations are linked collectively for you. I have fixed it by adding the links on the sidebar to the right. So if you missed any of them, you can find them right there.

Jane Tam and Polixeni Papapetrou

dim sum on newspaper Jane Tam

Nymphoto's newest member Jane Tam is the featured artist of the month on the Nymphoto site. Go check out the Conversation and the rest of her work on her site. I love the light and simplicity of the image above from her Foreigners in Paradise series.

Jane has been contributing so much to the group and blog since joining. She posted an excellent Conversation with Polixeni Papapetrou this morning whose work and background I've always been intrigued by. Thanks Jane!

Nina's Coversations

White Horse Tema Stauffer

Nina Buesing has been blogging for a little less than a year and that voice has grown to capture the hearts of many, including mine. She blogs on ninacorvallo.blogspot.com and is also the main voice behind the Nymphoto blog, to which I contribute. Checkout Nina's Conversation with Tema Stauffer which she posted earlier today.

Emily Shur

Jason Schwartzman copyright Emily Shur

Fire, Japan copyright Emily Shur

Over on the Nymphoto blog, Nina posted a great Conversation with Emily Shur this morning. I'm enjoying this series quite a bit as I'm learning more about artists that I've only heard bits and pieces of. Emily is a great celebrity photographer and I especially love this photo she made of Jason Schwartzman but what I also really admire is that she makes amazing personal work. Fire, Japan is entirely different but has the same wonderful sensibilities as her celebrity work.
