Not Eating Well

Ross finally arrived last Friday (woohoo!) and I decided that we needed to see Bergen the next day. I booked a last minute trip on Norwegian Air which was very affordable and Hanne hooked me up with a major discount at a hotel in downtown Bergen.

We walked out and headed to the famous open air seafood market. We decided on fish soup and fried calamari. What we got was not what we expected based on the photos and our imagination. 7 ringlets of odd tasting calamari on a bed of greasy fries NOK 130 ($20) and very thick and salty fish soup in a take out container NOK 80 ($12.50). We were totally unsatisfied but had blown our itty bitty budget. So we were left to wonder how to proceed with more caution and less greasy food. We couldn't afford the fancy king crab or langostine plates. The open faced sandwiches with shrimp were grossly overpriced because I knew they used bucket shrimp that is super cheap here so we decided against those. And we couldn't do moose or a handful of strawberries for $6. It's hard to live on American dollars in one of the most expensive places in the world. And not having a kitchen or fridge really cuts out some options. We survived the rest of the trip by eating lots of food during breakfast buffet at the hotel and a combo of deli or supermarket meat or vegetable "calzones" that properly grossed us out by the end of four days. Oh it's hard when a decent meal is around $50 and I actually care about what goes in my stomach. (For those who eat fast food, McDonald's is very affordable as is hotdogs that are served everywhere. Unfortunately I can't do McDonald's or hotdogs.)

But forget about my complaning. I'll post pics of how charming and beautiful Bergen is by land (the fjord tours didn't work out for us).

maybe you could see if there are some vegge places? They might have healthier options at a better price. I was surprised when I went to the Arctic Circle to be able to find a Vegge B&B that served us three healthy and delicious meals a day. Every body told me I would have to eat blubber while up there. You never know where you can find like-minded people :)

I did not see any vegetarian restaurants in Bergen or here in Trondheim. I'm pretty sure there aren't any because I asked. They are really into pork here. And I'm not really into pork. And they sold whale sandwiches at the Bergen fish market. We're back in Trondheim though and I just made a salad for dinner!

I don't know if any of these are current, but worth a try:
