Congee place in Hong Kong

I love congee, it's my favorite Chinese comfort food. For those of you who don't know what congee is, it's just cooked rice in water or broth, served piping hot. Congee can be plain or served with anything from vegetables to meat.

Mr. Lee at work just sent me these photos of a congee place he had told me about in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. I couldn't find it the last time I went. So he was good enough to take some photos to help guide me. I'm not going to HK any time soon but I will look forward to it when I do.

Peter Bialobrzeski

I just came across the work of Peter Bialobrzeski, through Amazon of all places. His palette is quite different and I'm curious to see the work in person. I found an interview with J. Colberg on Conscientious that touches on Bialobrzeski's views of German photography. I'm also quite smitten by the title Neon Tigers that is his project of "color photographs taken inside the "Tiger Cities," the name given to Asia's rapidly growing metropolises: Hong Kong, Bangkok, Shanghai, and Kuala Lumpur."

Michael Wolf's Hong Kong

I came across Michael Wolf's work via the Asian Photography Blog. Having just landed from Hong Kong, his work really resonates with what has been on my mind in the last couple of weeks. My favorite series is 100x100- "photographs of residents in their flats in Hong Kong's oldest public housing estate: 100 rooms, each 100 square feet in size." Architecture of Density, Real Fake Pictures (taken in China) are also quite interesting.

Movies that I've watched in the last week:

1. Minus Man- I really like Owen Wilson. His nose looks really awful in this one.
2. Chungking Express- I've seen this maybe 4 times now but rewatching it after going to Hong Kong, visiting Chungking Mansion and being offered curry and a room by the Indians and Africans, staying at Mirador Mansion (a similar block building one street away from Chungking Mansion), walking up and down the midlevels escalator, I have a different understanding and feel for the movie.
3. 400 Blows- I saw this first in film class in HS but couldn't remember most of it. I'm glad I rewatched it.
4. A Clockwork Orange- this one is really kind of scary. Very creepy.

Craving Asia

It's been more than two years since I've been back to Taiwan, where I spent my childhood years. I got an email from my cousin this morning with photos of his one year old boy that I have yet to meet. The images made me feel the need to go back and share in their lives. Thinking about Taiwan made me think of all the places in Asia that I love and all the foods I miss. The above photo was the last bowl of beef noodles I had from my home town in Taiwan. It's always the first thing I eat when I get off the plane, after an 18 hour flight. It's home.
